LCYVLichfield Cathedral Young Voices was founded in December 2008 as part of the Cathedral's MusicShare Programme.

MusicShare began in 2003. The idea behind MusicShare (which was then funded by the government’s Music and Dance Scheme via the Choir Schools’ Association), was to take the skills of Cathedral Musicians and the children of the Cathedral Choir out into schools in the Diocese to deliver vocal workshops that culminate in large joint concerts held in the Cathedral. Each term, three schools would be involved with mass concerts amounting to choirs of nearly 200 children at each concert.

In September 2007, the government launched its National Singing Campaign Sing Up, which is an attempt to get singing back into the heart of every child in the nation. Cathedral Chorister Outreach projects from across the country were drawn into this campaign and Lichfield was thrilled to gain large government grants in 2007, 2008 and 2009 in order to broaden the scope of the MusicShare project.

One result was the launch of Lichfield Cathedral Young Voices as a Saturday morning choir. The first rehearsal saw over 50 children from local schools join together, many of whom had been involved with the MusicShare workshops at their schools. Their first performance was four weeks later to a packed congregation for the Lichfield Cathedral Christmas Eve Crib service.

Since then they have participated in services and concerts in the Cathedral over the past year and their schedule has quickly developed to include concerts further afield - for example, in large-scale singing events in both Symphony Hall, Birmingham and The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
